The conservation world has lost one of its greatest champions. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the British-born zoologist who founded Save the Elephants, passed away Monday in Kenya at age 83. For more than five decades, Douglas-Hamilton devoted himself to understanding and protecting Africa's elephants, pioneering the use of tracking collars and spending countless hours observing herds from the ground and air.
His careful documentation of the heartbreaking loss of over half of Africa's elephants during the 1980s helped convince the world to ban international ivory trade in 1989. We knew him as someone who didn't just work alone but lifted others up, generously sharing his expertise and inspiring collaboration across the conservation community. He leaves behind a legacy that protected elephants and empowered the people fighting for them.
