Behind every successful safari, healthy elephant herd, and beautiful landscape in Murchison Falls National Park is a dedicated team of unsung heroes: field teams, veterinarians, and rangers. Recent operations have clearly shown the dangers that rangers and other frontline professionals face every day.
During a recent chase after poachers, one of the rangers stepped into a wheel trap set by the very people he was pursuing. Luckily, he was not seriously injured, but this incident shows the daily risks our teams face in protecting wildlife.
The team discovered trees stripped of bark by charcoal burners from nearby communities, a practice that kills the trees in preparation for burning. In a coordinated operation, teams from Wangkwar and Ayago1 ambushed and arrested two suspects.
After questioning, the suspects led rangers to hidden charcoal kilns within the protected area, which were immediately destroyed.
During a joint patrol, rangers from Wangkwar and Lugaya saw a group of poachers who fled, leaving behind their equipment: two wheel traps, two spears, and nine newly set wire snares. Recovering this equipment means many animals were saved from harm.
Each patrol, arrest, and destroyed snare helps secure the future of tourism in Uganda by protecting the wildlife and landscapes that make Murchison Falls one of Africa’s leading destinations.
These efforts benefit wildlife, visitors, and local communities, ensuring future generations can enjoy Uganda’s rich biodiversity.
Our generous donors and partners, including Tusk, International Elephant Foundation, Global Conservation, Cincinnati, and INL, make this work possible.
