On this World Ranger Day, we honour the brave men and women on the frontline of conservation and all the sacrifices they make. Those who patrol deep into the wild, monitor wildlife, remove snares, arrest offenders, respond to emergencies, and engage communities.
Rangers face considerable risks; in everything they must do. From dangerous armed conflict and poachers, and the traps they set, to the wild animals they work around and protect, not to mention the communities they help to protect from elephants, lions and buffaloes. They workday and night, in incredibly distant landscapes – away from family and friends, and the everyday access to markets and amenities.
Today, we also remember those who have been injured or lost their lives in service. Their sacrifice is a debt we carry with reverence.
At Uganda Conservation Foundation, we work every day to ensure these heroes are supported in a tangible way – provided clothing and equipment, quality accommodation, clean water, power and empowered to do their job, as well as promoting their welfare. We also provide extensive levels of training to ensure they are safe and professional in their workplace.
Together with Uganda Wildlife Authority and our partners, we have built and equipped Joint Operation Command Centres to improve coordination and safety, and constructed over 30 ranger posts in strategic locations across the Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley National Parks. Each has rainwater collection tanks – saving UWA considerable amounts of money per month from driving water bowsers around the parks endlessly.
On this World Ranger Day, we say thank you not only to the rangers, but also to our donors and partners whose generosity makes this work possible. You are investing in people who risk everything to protect Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage.
You too can show your support by donating to our efforts and the Wildlife Ranger Challenge.
